Q. DOES A CHARITABLE BEQUEST PROVIDE A TAX BENEFIT?
Yes. The donor’s estate is entitled to a donation receipt for the full value of the bequest, providing significant tax credit on the estate’s final tax return.
Q. WHAT ARE THE WAYS TO MAKE A BEQUEST TO THE GSO?
You can gift a specific dollar amount of property (“I give to the Guelph Symphony Orchestra the sum of $10,000 to be used for its General Operations Fund ”) or a specific piece of property (“I give 500 shares of ABC stock”).
Or you can gift all or a portion of whatever remains of your estate after all debts, taxes, expenses and any other bequests have been paid: “I give 10 percent (10%) of the residue of my estate to the Guelph Symphony Orchestra to be used at their discretion.”
Q. HOW DO YOU DIRECT THE MONEY?
There are three choices.
a) Designate The General Operations Fund:
“I give to the Guelph Symphony Orchestra 10 percent (10%) of the residue of my estate to be used for its General Operations Fund.”
b) Designate a specific purpose:
“I give to the Guelph Symphony Orchestra 10 percent (10%) of the residue of my estate to be used at their discretion for the prize money for a competition for young artists .”
c) No Designation
“I give to the Guelph Symphony Orchestra 10 percent (10%) of the residue of my estate to be used at their discretion.”
Q. WHAT ARE THE WAYS TO GIVE LIFE INSURANCE?
You can retain ownership of the policy and designate the GSO to receive all or a fraction of the death proceeds. Or you can transfer ownership of a new or existing policy irrevocably to the GSO.
The staff at the GSO can help design a bequest that fits your needs and goals.
