Stephanie Lai
Cello
I began my cello studies at the age of 4 with Ann Vallentyne in Hamilton, Ontario, and went through the Suzuki program in my childhood. I was introduced to chamber music young— even playing in a little cello quartet with my two of my best friends (to this day). I continued to play in youth orchestras into my teens, then took my studies to Wilfrid Laurier University. I took a break from the cello when I began my professional career in industries that weren’t the arts (communications, publishing, and pharma). The opportunity to join the GSO came when I moved to Guelph, and I have enjoyed this experience immensely.
Do you play another instrument or is there one you wished you could play?
The piano! I wouldn’t have to carry it everywhere, haha
What is your favourite food/book/movie/guilty pleasure?
You can usually find me entrenched in a thriller or fantasy series.
What is the best thing about being a member of Guelph Symphony?
Giving back to the community I live in.
If you couldn’t be a musician, what would you want to do?
I love my day job. I’d continue to do that.
